As the second phase of the Patriot Plaza vision, portions of the existing street system and a central parking lot are removed, transforming the sea of cars into a signature open space dedicated to the campus community while tying into the park-like setting that defines campus. This space gives the University a key element desperately needed on campus, a large flat circular programmable lawn capable of hosting myriad outdoor events and activities from concerts to commencement. A variety of seating and passive spaces surround the lawn, including a lower plaza along a major pedestrian corridor, terraced seating, and upper plaza with reflecting pool and waterfall that tie the space to the new Alumni Center.
Pedestrian circulation is clarified throughout the site and the vehicle is removed from the space, creating a singular connected landscape and sets the stage for future campus improvements.
The scope includes the construction of a new flat circular lawn area over the existing parking lot, surrounded by terraced amphitheater seating made from precast concrete. Adjacent to the lawn, a concrete lower plaza with planting beds and outdoor tables sits just outside of the University Center. Southwest of the plaza and lawn is a 20’ wide new student walk, which will ultimately tie into the second phase of the project, an ellipse that extends around Ritter Tower.
Above the terraced amphitheater, a second concrete plaza site adjacent to a reflecting pool and acts as the entrance to the space from the northeast. The reflecting pool turns into a waterfall that spills down toward the lawn space. Multiple concrete sidewalks run through the site and tie into existing pedestrian paths on campus. Mass planting areas and tree canopy throughout the space create shade and frame the lawn.
